The Cyril M. Leeder Prize in Urban Design

The Cyril M. Leeder Prize is awarded annually to students making an outstanding contribution to Urban Design who are either in their third or fourth years of the Bachelor of Architecture program or in their first year of the Masters program. The Prize will be awarded following a juried competition. The jury will consist of Mr. Cyril Leeder (or a family member), the Director of the School of Architecture, the Associate Directors and one invited external architect. The winner will be announced by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Architecture. The entries for the competition must present architectural ideas and concepts for either a single building that demonstrates exceptional relationships at the human scale to its neighborhood or a broad scale development proposal that acknowledges its surroundings in a way that enhances the public room. The judging criteria established by the jury must uphold principles of sound urban design by positively relating densities, configurations and uses of the proposed design to the needs of a constantly evolving human condition.

(A notice of intent to compete must be filed with the School of Architecture together with a declaration of urban design principles (an 800 word text) written and signed by the student(s) and countersigned by her/his lecturer or studio head or critic. In addition, students will submit a board of concept drawings (A3 format) and a small massing model together with a CD or DVD containing all their work. Students may form teams of not more than three persons and may use either a workshop or studio project in-progress. Submission of the notice of intent to compete with the declaration of urban design principles must be submitted no later than 3 p.m. March 31^st, 2006 at the Main Office, Ground Floor of the Architecture Building. Final submissions must be received at the Main Office no later than 3 p.m. on April 13^th, 2006 and the judging and awards will take place before graduation. First prize includes a cash award and a gold medal; second prize consists of a silver medal; and third prize is a bronze medal. Students agree that their work may be posted on the Internet for others to peruse as exemplary work in the field of Urban Design and that their names and likenesses may be included in a media release.
