Ottawa Senators COO to establish Carleton Architecture Award

Cyril Leeder and friends to create $25,000 urban design award

(Ottawa) – Running a successful real estate development company was a great training ground for building one of the NHL’s most successful franchises. Cyril Leeder, Chief Operating Officer of the Ottawa Senators and Corel Centre, is now challenging Carleton Architecture students to tackle sound urban design and development.  The Cyril M. Leeder Prize, an endowed $25,000 award, will be established by Cyril and colleagues of his in Ottawa’s real estate, architecture and development community.

“City building is essentially a positive exercise by positive people,” said Mr. Leeder.  “This prize in urban design is meant to celebrate the optimism of the human condition and our future.”

Urban design and development are becoming ever more challenging and important elements in the way Canadians work, live and play.  Structural changes in the economy, from mass production for a mass society, to flexible production for a fragmented society and global communications and work-from-anywhere have brought about new interest in the “built environment” in which we live.  This has made the role of urban design, and urban designers and architects, even more significant in development of their communities.

Marco Frascari, director of Carleton’s School of Architecture, welcomes this new award.  “This is wonderful news for Carleton Students,” said Dr. Frascari.  “The competitive nature of the award means that students will have to focus on producing their best work while being compared to each other within pre-set guidelines. It will give Carleton architecture students an excellent introduction to the real world of building cities that are essentially more livable and more sustainable.”

Students will be expected to uphold principles of sound urban design by positively relating densities, configurations and uses of the proposed design to the needs of a constantly evolving human condition.

The Cyril M. Leeder Prize will be awarded annually to students either in their third or fourth years of the Bachelor of Architecture program or in their first year of the Masters program. The prize will be determined by a jury which will include Mr. Leeder, representatives from the School of Architecture and one external architect.

Funding for the award will come from a lead gift from Cyril Leeder and contributions from Ottawa’s business community – Adjeleian Allen Rubeli, Ltd., ZW Group and Cassels Brock and Blackwell have contributed to date. A celebration of the campaign efforts to date took place at the Ottawa Senators & Anaheim Mighty Ducks game in Ottawa on January 19th.
