The
National Capital Commission (NCC) announced today it has conditionally
selected Claridge Building Corporation as the
successful proponent for the development of the Sussex-Mackenzie South site
(former Daly Building). This site is one of Ottawa's most visible and strategic sites located in
the heart of the Capital, along Confederation
Boulevard at the intersection of Sussex Drive, Rideau Street
and Mackenzie Avenue
in Ottawa, Ontario.
Mr.
Marcel Beaudry, Chairperson of the National
Capital Commission is pleased with the selection: "The Claridge Building Corporation proposal for the
development of the former Daly
Building site meets
the NCC's requirements for an innovative scheme
that builds upon the location of the site. The residential use is
straightforward and credible and gives the right message in the heart of
the city. This project is a wonderful example of public and private sector
collaboration that will serve both the residents of the region and
Canadians as a whole."
The Claridge Building Corporation proposal includes nine
floors of condominium apartments containing approximately 70 units above
31,850 square feet of retail space accessible from both Sussex Drive and Mackenzie Avenue. Parking for 171
stalls is on two levels underground. The NCC’s
Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Realty favoured
this proposal for its urban design configuration, the potential of its
architecture and its financial benefit. They expanded by saying that:
"The building’s strong urban design responds to the tradition of the
city. It is expected that, as the building design is developed, it will be
elegant, strong and modern, exhibiting clarity, simplicity and straightforwardness."
The NCC
will seek Treasury Board approval to enter into a long-term lease subject
to satisfactory response from Claridge Building
Corporation on technical and operational considerations. The proponent will
also submit a detailed design proposal which will be subject to the NCC's design approval process.
The
National Capital Commission is a Crown corporation responsible for
developing Canada's
Capital Region as a national meeting place; for increasing Canadians'
understanding of their country through their Capital; and for safeguarding
and preserving Canada's
treasures within the National Capital Region.
