Example—Preparing a Media Release

Jamie Pold’s Mountain Biking School

Camp Fortune, Gatineau Park, Québec

What a Great Mind and Body Learning Experience

What is newsworthy?

  1. Jamie has won the first ever Carleton University Sprott School of Business Entrepreneurship Award for $4,000.
  2. Mountain Biking is an exciting sport—very telegenic.
  3. Jamie is among 20 new startups over the last three years from Carleton’s new Entrepreneurship Track.
  4. Moms and Dads are constantly on the lookout for things to keep 15 to 18 year olds busy and productively occupied during the summer.

Jamie needs to draft a media release on his win. He needs to look at some samples such as:

http://www.exploriem.org/SaundersFarm.pdf

http://www.exploriem.org/FedericosGondolasMediaRelease.pdf

Jamie needs to include interesting quotes from the competition judges including Professor Shaobo Ji, Ms. Rosemary Carter, Professor John Callahan and Dr. Bruce Firestone.

Jamie needs to draft suggested quotes for his media release, such as this one for Dr. Firestone:

"Jamie has charisma and in the business that he is launching— a teaching business really— charm and a caring nature will help him relate well to young people. Good luck, Jamie," Dr. Bruce M. Firestone, Adjunct Research Professor, Carleton University.

Jamie needs to get a mentor ASAP and quote him or her too.

Jamie needs to include an action photo of him in a mountain bike race.

Before releasing his media bulletin, he needs to establish a name for his new School and a basic web site too. This is so when he releases it, Moms and Dads looking to sign their children up for a summer camp can go right there and sign up.

He will need a telephone number and an answering machine too so that folks can reserve a spot by phone and he’ll need a fax machine as well since some people still use these things.

Reservations should also include a deposit of some kind to hold their spot—something like 30%. So if it costs $350 per student for the week, he would take $105 by cheque or credit card. The balance would be due, say, May 1.

The Intra-School Announcement:

We are pleased to report that Jamie Pold has been awarded the first ever Sprott School Entrepreneurship Co-op Program Award for $4,000. Jamie will use the funds to begin his new startup in the summer of 2003.

Mr. Pold will be building on his experience as a competitive mountain bike enthusiast to begin a Mountain Biking School at Camp Fortune in the beautiful Gatineau Hills, Quebec for young adults ranging in age from 15 years and up.

Jamie will produce a report on his experiences for September 2003 which will include:

1. his Business Model and Plan;

2. a case study based on his experiences;

3. an instructor's manual describing among other matters what he has learned-- the lessons he has taken from the experience-- do's and don'ts;

4. internally prepared financial statements of his results.

Congratulations, Jamie.

Jamie will also be drafting a media release about his win, which will be available shortly.

Mr. Pold will join at least 20 other students from the entrepreneurship track (http://www.dramatispersonae.org/EntrepreneurshipTrack.htm) at Carleton University who have established their own startups in the last three years.
